Spacebar Speed Test
Test your spacebar tapping speed in 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Measure your clicks per second (CPS), peak burst rate, and unlock animal rank tiers.

The spacebar speed test (also known as the Spacebar Counter or Spacebar CPS Test) is a popular reaction and dexterity challenge used by competitive gamers, speedrunners, and students. The spacebar is the widest key on any keyboard, relying on a metal stabilizer wire and spring to return to its resting position after each actuation.
This online spacebar counter measures how many times you can press and release your spacebar within an exact time limit. The test activates automatically on your very first tap: no countdown delays or warmups. The high-precision clock counts down in milliseconds while calculating your real-time presses per second (CPS).
Popular spacebar tapping techniques
Achieving a score above 9.0 CPS requires more than raw finger strength; proper hand ergonomics and switch rebound mechanics are essential. Experienced clickers use three primary techniques:
- Standard Thumb Tapping: Resting your palm on the desk and using your dominant thumb. Good for rhythm and accuracy, averaging between 6.0 and 7.5 CPS.
- Two-Thumb Drumming: Positioning both your left and right thumbs over the spacebar and alternating taps in a continuous drumbeat. This spreads muscle fatigue across both hands and easily reaches 8.5 to 10.5 CPS.
- Butterfly / Two-Finger Alternating: Using the index and middle finger of your dominant hand to rapidly flutter against the keycap. Highly effective on low-profile mechanical and scissor-switch laptop keyboards.
- Jitter Tapping: Tensing the forearm muscles to produce a high-frequency vibration down the arm and hand into the spacebar. Can achieve 11+ CPS in short 1 to 5 second bursts.
Understanding CPS score and rank tiers
Your final score is evaluated across six standardized performance tiers:
- Sluggish Sloth (0 – 3.9 CPS): Relaxed typing cadence. Useful for warming up fingers and testing switch travel.
- Casual Turtle (4.0 – 5.9 CPS): Typical everyday computer user pace.
- Bouncing Rabbit (6.0 – 7.9 CPS): Above-average speed with solid consistency.
- Speedy Cheetah (8.0 – 9.9 CPS): Fast competitive gamer tier. Strong muscle memory and rapid switch reset.
- Lightning Falcon (10.0 – 11.9 CPS): Elite rhythm game player speed. Excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Cosmic Space Master (12.0+ CPS): World-class speed. Exceptional jitter or two-handed technique.
How to use
- Choose a test durationSelect from 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 seconds. The 5-second mode is the universally accepted competitive standard.
- Position your thumbs or fingersRest your dominant thumb or both index fingers lightly above the spacebar key on your physical keyboard.
- Hit the spacebar to startThe countdown begins the millisecond you register your first tap. Holding down the key is ignored—only individual presses count.
- Tap as fast as possibleMaintain a steady, high-cadence tapping rhythm until the clock strikes zero.
- Review your score and tierView your total presses, taps per second (CPS), peak 1-second burst rate, and animal rank badge.
